The Friends of Königsallee

Königsallee is more than just a world-famous shopping boulevard; its architecture is also something quite special. It is characterised by the moat running along its middle with littoral-like embankments and an abundant stock of plane and chestnut trees. Bridges, fountains, ornately designed balustrades, sculptures and lovingly restored buildings give Königsallee its distinctive atmosphere. Since 1994, the moat, bridges and fountains on Königsallee have been listed. However, all that glistens is not gold. Most of the structures are around 100 years old and have been exposed to the elements and suffered damage over the course of time. In consultation with the City of Düsseldorf and the preservation authorities, the Friends of Königsallee (known in German as the Förderverein KÖ Kulturerbe e.V.) has undertaken to help professionally renovate and restore the heritage created by the architects of the Kö so that it is preserved for locals and visitors to the city alike.
